Revlon Colorstay Foundation Combination/Oily Skin Review

I've been using Revlon Colorstay Foundation in for a year now, but I never thought about reviewing it, coz I thought my fotds were enough :p. Truthfully, I think foundation is the hardest makeup product to buy. I personally don't depend on reviews I read on the net when it comes to foundations. I'd rather test them at the stores myself. But a few loyal readers have requested this, so I'm doing it to keep them loyal hehe...

Claims ~ ColorStay Makeup with SoftFlex provides lightweight comfort, so you feel like you’re not wearing makeup. Looks fresh for up to 16 hours. Specially formulated for combination or oily skin, this oil-free formula helps control shine all day and gives you flawless looking skin. Makeup looks fresh and feels great for up to 16 hours thanks to the lightweight, comfortable feel from the SoftFlex ColorStay formula.
Medium to full coverage, with SPF 6 protection.

Also available in Normal/Dry Skin.
Revlon Colorstay Foundation ~ 310 Warm Golden

Warm Golden was the shade that's closest to my skin tone (MAC NC25) when I bought it. It is a little too warm, but once applied, it mimics my skin tone perfectly.

Love:
♥  It is purrr...fect for combination/oily skin. It mattifies the skin really well.
♥  It is lightweight and never looks cakey, even if I layer it for more coverage.
♥  It evens out my skin tone & it covers minor imperfections.
♥  Blending it is easy & it never looks streaky.
♥  Brush is not necessary. Fingers blend it just fine.
♥  Really really transfer resistant. I wiped some on my leg while swatching it, it dried up, and I couldn't get it off easily.
♥  Even though it has SPF 6, it doesn't look shiny in flash photography (when set with powder, of course)
♥  Stays on all day. Probably lives up to the 16 hrs claim. That is, if you stay indoors in AC environment all day.
♥  Does not irritate my skin or cause pimples.
♥  I like the smell. Many complain about the medicinal smell but I don't think it's bad at all. It's a sweet medicine smell. No, not cough syrup, more like...umm...I can't explain it...gah! Some say paint- nope. Some say clay- maybe. Okay, mix clay, some kind of sweet syrup and Disprin(Aspirin) tablet. No, I don't do drugs haha.
♥  Inexpensive & this 30 ml bottle will last for more than a year, unless you use it religiously.

Don't love:
-  Bottle is without pump, so it gets real messy sometimes. It is now available with a pump, but I don't know if its widely available yet.
-  Sometimes when my face is too moisturized/slippery, it becomes hard to blend the foundation. This is where a synthetic brush (like Sigma F80 Flat Top Kabuki) really helps.
-  Skin becomes a little oily after a while. I usually have to touch up my powder several times a day.
-   It oxidizes (darkens) sometimes, esp when it gets too hot.

*Best way to get product out of the bottle without too much mess is to put your middle finger on the opening, tilt bottle, and straighten it back quickly. Pouring on your palm gets too messy + you might pour too much.

I'll show you how it works on the side of my face with the most problems- spots, scars & hidden melasma (I told you, it's just waiting to come out! Grr...)
Applied with fingers. You can click to enlarge

Price ~ I don't remember how much I bought it for (from Malaysia), but in India it costs Rs.700-750
Rating ~ ♥♥♥♥4/5. Minus 1 for the bottle without pump.

Repurchase? Until pump bottles are available. I can't say about the other type (Normal/Dry) but this one right here is a must-try foundation if you have oily/combination skin. Even though it is oil-free and controls shine, it has never made my face look made-up.

Have you tried this foundation yet?

  3. I was just about to buy it, but all the bottles somehow had twocoloured foundation inside them. Is that normal? I bought Bourjois HealthyMix instead . You have used both right, which one did you like more?
And the pictures are great Cynthia, but I cant help and wonder, did that good foundation go to waste in that first pic?? :P

  4. CZ Colorstay foundation is amazing I just wish Revlon would package these with dispenser pump. Also two very important things about this foundation is that the SPF 6 is too low, minimum SPF 8 is admissible for any product to claim sun protection.Darker shades in Colorstay foundations (Toast onwards till Mocha) DO NOT contain SPF.

Secondly the same foundation shade name has a different color in combination /oily than it does in normal/dry so one needs to be careful with swatches

  6. I wish they made an oily/dry combo version! I've wanted to try this because people say it's a dupe for MAC studio fix fluid: but at the same time I want to try other brands like MUFE or NARS.

  12. i have a bottle of this but i can never get myself to use it because i'm worried it's too thick and heavy (since its full coverage) and that it might break me out even more!

  16. GGG- Ya it does :). Thanks

Karishma- Maybe it's coz the bottle was not shaken well. They are very different, this has more coverage is is more matte than Bourjois HM, which is not matte. Haha....yes a little bit was wasted, but rest I used for the swatches :D

  17. IBC- Oh that's news to me. That's why I think foundation is the hardest to buy. Esp in India where the shade selection is very limited. Maybe they should increase the SPF in that case

  18. pnb- It looks great in photographs. I used it when using flash here- http://www.indianvanitycase.com/2011/04/lotd-big-bow-bright-lips-my-bedroom.html
As long as you control the flash, it looks fine.

  24. Hi,

    Nice review.
I have been using this for 3 years now and still hooked to it.
Its a very good product. Stays for like 'really' long time and never gives me a cakey-face.
However, the timing is very important while applying this product.I have to blend it the moment its on my skin or else it dries up immediately.

  25. I have combination skin, that is usually under the duress of nature's wrath. My skin would be dry one day, oily the next, and acne prone in between. Over the years, I have accumulated a plethora of facial products that have all seen the same fate:(collecting dust in a box at the back of my closet). I am now on the verge of thirty, and am starting to see the ravages of age. I had just about had it with my skin until I tried this night cream. After only one application, the stress on my face began to disappear. I don't know how it worked, but it worked. My skin is now moisturized without being oily or blotchy, and I haven't had a breakout since. My personal life has even improved. I swear, that this is a face cream from God!

  26. I had been using clinque foundation for the longest time and I decided to try out something new and better. So,I went to sephora and got a tiny sample of the Make Forever HD foundation and what a disappoint :( I REALLY wanted to like this product, I tried it on with the HD primer and it did NOT work!*sigh* I guess it works different on everyone, but I must say they have a wide variety of colors to choose from so plus point people wont have a hard time trying to find a foundation that matches their skin tone and it might just end up working for them. I guess my next try outs were Bobbi brown and Mac foundation let's see which one works *Fingers crossed* :P Also, guys if your looking for a 'flawless' finish well depending on the blemishes on your skin, this foundation is NOT a full coverage, it ranges from light to medium coverage and if you guys check out the reviews on youtube people say so also from personal experience I agree and the lady at sephora had advised me the same exact thing, but hey if it works for you then good for you :D
P.s: I just discovered your blog a few hours ago and now am hooked on it :P and love your reviews and your tips and your veryyyy prettty :)
