I started seeing the white stuff on these Chambor Powder Matte Lipsticks last year in Newcastle, and I thought: 'Oh, it must be frost from the cold.', like an idiot. It was freezing cold and snowing too, so I thought these lipstick froze...err...or something. Then recently, when I was taking out all my red lippies, I saw the white stuff looked thicker! I googled and people are calling the whiteness on lipsticks 'Fungus'. Ick! >.<
Shades: Rubis Rouge & Orange Flambe. I wore Orange Flambe in my Modern Cleopatra Look here.
I got them in late 2012, so it hasn't been that long for them to go bad. This is my first experience, and I'm quite put off. I won't bash the brand, because it's not like they did it intentionally, but I will not be buying these lipsticks again, that's for sure.
What do you think this white stuff is, ladies? Fungus or something else? If there are any Science nerds here, please enlighten us! =D
Definitely looks like colonies of something living... But it probably wasn't there when the lipsticks were manufactured - the lipsticks got infected somehow...

Hey Cynthia-if the white covering is velvetty then its definitely fungus! If it is powdery, it can be that some chemicals have dried out. Sad the two shades are so lovely. I got fungus on my maybelline moisture extremes but my Chambor stuff are good. I guess storing in a freezer (but the number of lippy we have, we probably would need to throw away the veggies for that :D ) or wiping off the lippy tip after each use with a clean tissue might help (but these need to go :( ).
ReplyDeleteLooks powdery to me, but I'm already grossed out. Yup these are going, I was gonna bin these anyways. Haha you're right about the veggies heehee :D

This has happened to me with my Maybelline color sensational lipsticks.. It was not even a year old since I bought them.. I just threw it away and that was my last one from that range :( gives a weird feeling to buy the same range later :/
ReplyDeleteI would definitely agree with Rekha and Anuradha. I had to throw away about 4 of my Maybelline Colorsensational lipsticks because of fungal growth. I think it is fungus C. or in any case, even if the wax has separated, I think it's not a good idea to use the lispticks. I'm sure we have a gazillion of lipsticks more.
DeleteGawd Color Sensational lippies too?! Now I have to go and check those, just in case. I'm definitely throwing these away Nivedita :D
DeleteYes Rekha I would also feel uneasy buying these again =\

Many have been complaining the white things that sprout on Maybelline lipsticks, I remember reading this http://www.temptalia.com/maybelline-yummy-plummy-mochachino-colorsensational-lip-colors-reviews-photos-swatches where same thing. Not sure what it is.
ReplyDeleteGosh those spots look scary! :D Thanks for sharing!

I'm thinking it may even be recrystallized fats from the lipstick, the same thing that happens with chocolate (cocoa butter) when you put it in a warm room and in the fridge again for example. Which also may look like fungus. Either way, too risky to use it again!
ReplyDeleteI thought about that too, but these look way too powdery and weird.

I've faced fungus issues with Maybelline Moisture extremes though never with Chambor. It could also be the oils etc. freezing in the cold and forming a coating though one can't be sure! Fungus generally happens in more moist/warm conditions.
ReplyDeleteYa, I also thought it's the oils in it coz they had beads of oil when they were new, but then I saw the white layer thicken with spotty appearance....

eeewwwwwww!!! but its surprising for fungus to come up in cold places. But me thinks if the lippies go cold in extreme weather when the weather changes they turned warm and got condensation on them which lead to fungus. makes sense maybe?
ReplyDeleteYa that makes sense :)

Hmm...a cold moist climate is actually quite ideal for fungus. And it can survive on ammonia even. So definitely it can grow on a lipstick. Throw them and disinfect your other stuff CZ!
ReplyDeleteFortunately they didn't touch my other stuff, coz I kept them separately

That is disgusting! It reminds me of the white stuff on crayons.
ReplyDeleteEven if it is not fungus (which I doubt), it is a sign that the oils or some other ingredient is separating and the formula has changed.. It may not have the same slip, texture, feel or quality...
ReplyDeleteThat could be the case T

Uggggh fungus or not, those lippies need to goooo away fast.
ReplyDeleteEw ew EW. I'm sorry, but fungus, skin diseases, and anything that looks like clusters of something disgusting just icks me out!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely looks like Fungus, especially the top of the pink lipstick, where those little white dots are (*shudders*).
Throw them out. Even if they aren't fungus, something bad has happened to these beauties, and I don't think they'd be good for use. (I wouldn't apply those things on my lips now, no way.)
Lipstick fungus is quite common, especially with moisture-y ones like Maybelline Colorsensational lipsticks (which is why I haven't bought any)
They have gone in the trash already :D

It is fungus for sure and it looks hideous. Quite a chance to get them as London does have frequent rains. Fungi love it. Those white colonies remind me of the Dermatophytes fungus which could cause infections too. So be careful. They should be thrown into a waste bin and a pic to the company for them to know.
ReplyDeleteYes Neeraj, this weather defo made them worse!

This is fungus same happened with me but mine was from revlon...so have to throw it...
ReplyDeleteI had that happen twice - once in a brand new Sephora box of lip colors that I promptly returned - and another time in a 6-month-old LE shade from MAC. Must say, am superimpressed with MAC's customer service cos I just called up to tell them about it, not knowing what they could possibly do, and they promptly apologized and refunded the cost - without me even saying anything beyond "somethign white is growing on this lipstick..isn't that odd?"
ReplyDeleteThat's so nice of them Rads, shows integrity.

God that looks gross.. frost, fungus or whatever, time to drop these 2 into the bin ..I have 2 of the powder matte lipsticks from Chambor, Thankfully nothing of this sort on them yet..

The same thing happened to my Chambor lipstick! I don't know what to do.. Should i keep using it or chuck it and call it a day??
ReplyDeleteChuck it. That's what I did
Delete♥xx♥
I have no idea what it is but whatever, it definitely looks scary and bad!
ReplyDeleteomg i have never seen this happening to lipsticks..... it looks gross and dangerous!!
ReplyDeleteoMG ...looks like something serious ...wahtever it may be throw it out
ReplyDeleteThis kinda thing never happened to me and I am sure if it would have happened just like you I must have thought of it as ice!! Its scary!!
ReplyDeleteWell I was wondering if we could follow each other via bloglovin, gfc and g+? Do visit my blog and let me know!! :)

Ya happened with my Maybelline Moisture Extreme..never heard of Chambor getting fungus..now would be careful..thanks for the heads up,,
ReplyDeleteNO FUNGUS! technically it looks like it is a case of "blooming", wax are separating and creating this white surface
ReplyDeleteThat is possible, but still too gross to touch it to lips! :D
Delete♥xx♥
This happened to my Mac lipsticks too! It didn't look that bad, but I throw then away nevertheless... So sad one of them was LE Cyndi :( :(
ReplyDeleteAww...I feel yr pain :(
