TOPSHOP Velvet Lips Swatches ~ Velveteen Ribbon, Plush

Have you ever wondered if there'll ever be a matte lipstick that would stay on your lips like wall paint? A lipstick that won't smear your coffee cup? A lipstick your long hair cannot stick to? A lipstick that won't land on your fingertips when you do flying kisses? {The last one when you pretend you won an Oscar, and the kisses are flying to James Cameron. Of course you won Best Actress in Titanic!}
Well, that lipstick is what I expected Topshop Velvet Lips to be....
"Part of The Damned collection: a highly pigmented lip cream with a powdery soft, ultimate matte finish. Wear alone or with lip liner for a truly opaque, high colour finish." ~ Topshop.
These could be Lime Crime Velvetines, but not sure coz I have not tried those.

Topshop Velvet Lips are available in 3 shades - the third being a black shades called Raven. Had I seen it when I first saw these, I probably would have picked it over the red.
Velveteen Ribbon ~ A true blue-based red. When layered, it looks darker on the edges and more vampy.
Plush ~ Purple with teeny tiny purpley shimmer mixed in. I failed to notice them the first few times I wore it, and when I did, I liked it a little bit more.

Velveteen Ribbon
Plush ~ With shimmer

*Sorry my skin looks so pale and corpse-like. It was just so gloomy when I took the pics.
The Good: They dry to an opaque, transfer-proof, matte finish. You can kiss a white shirt with them without leaving any stain (not that we do that!) They don't come off easily with just a tissue, you'll need a wipe or makeup remover. They are fragrance-free.
The Bad: They are DRY, and can make your lips feel very stiff, and also looking patchy, especially when you layer 2-3 coats. The texture feels powdery. The worst part, they crack and then peel off they come in contact with saliva, water & lip balm. You kiss your date with these lipsticks, you'll see red or purple bits between his teeth when he grins at you later. That is, if he didn't run away.
I just couldn't wear them for a long time. I found myself wiping it all off within an hour. I wish the texture was more comfortable.

Overall, I see these as "fashion" lipsticks because they look striking & unusual, but I don't really see them being staples for people who want comfortable lippies they can smile with in a non-robotic way....and who fear what I said above.
I realized I forgot to click pics of the applicator. It's just a regular doe-foot applicator like that of lipglosses.

  6. The red one it's very similar to the Essence Stay Matte, which I have!
I agree with you the "fashion use" of these products...In fact, I wear mine under a red lipstick, to avoid empty spaces when it leave. :)
    Kisses!

  7. They definitely don't look like everyday lip products. I can totally imagine them being used for a dark-themed runway show though!

  11. Drying and peeling definitely don't sound good! I own both the Lime Crime velvetines which definitely perform better than these and feel light! Easily staying for a good few hours before getting all patchy!

  24. The velveteen ribbon looks stunning on you! Too bad the formula isn't comfortable at all. Is it the dupe for Lime Crime Velvetines Wicked?
