I am not going to preach what I don't practice, like eat healthy, drink lots of milk and stuff like that.
These are just tips that work for me. I have pretty strong nails already, but they chip and peel all the time. So I do the following to fight back, or in this case, to scratch back....rawwwrrr!!!
1. I avoid clipping my nails, unless they are very long and it would take forever to file them short. I read in some magazine a long time ago that clipping your nails cause them to break easily, so it's better to file them instead. I use Scholl Nail Filer which looks like this one.....

2. Buff your nails once a week. This is like exfoliating your nails. If you use a scrub on your face every week to remove dead skin, why not do the same to your nails?! This will make your nails healthier and remove the yellowness caused by nail polish. Buffing also encourages your nails to grow. I use The Body Shop Nail Buffer
3. Use a hand cream or moisturizing lotion. after every time you wash your hands. If you apply a little extra on your nails and massage the cream into your nails till it disappears, that's even better.
4. I soak my hands in warm Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Coconut Oil once or twice a month. This makes my hands soft and nails less prone to breakage and peeling. The oil makes the nails more pliable/flexible and hence they won't break and chip easily. Cartilage is harder to break than a hard bone.
5. I take Biotin supplements. They make my hair and nails healthier and grow faster. I guess calcium tablets would be good too, but I don't take them these days. I remember my grandma used to feed me those sweet orange flavored calcium tablets when I was a kid. Tasted nice. Hmm...maybe I'll start having those too.
6. Apply nail polish. Nails will not break so easily if there's a coat of polish on them. Forget all that "Let your nails breathe" stuff. You'll need the protection of a nail polish, be it colored or clear, if you want them to not break. Use a top coat to make your nail polish last longer so you won't need to use nail polish remover too often. Nail polish remover dries your nails making them brittle and more prone to breakage. Acetone-free nail polish remover has always been a better choice, so let's use that. I use Colorbar Top Coat, Street Wear/Lakme/Silkygirl gentle/ Oriflame Acetone-free nail Polish Removers.
Hope you find these tips helpful. There are a lot more you can do, but I decided to just list the ones I follow myself :)

Great tips girl! Your nails are gorgeous! xoxo
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post. I am on a constant mission to improve my nails and am interested to read that you buff once a week. Buffing is the only thing that keeps nail polish on my nails ie I have to buff and then apply polish, but someone told me it's really bad for your nails. Oh well it can't be true as you have great nails so I am off to buff mine and get some polish on them so that they look nice again!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for those tipes, I swear by most of them already (=
ReplyDeleteVery good tips, Cynthia! You had mentioned it before and I still think that tip about soaking your hands in extra virgin olive oil is the best tip ever!
ReplyDeleteAah, how nice to have naturally strong nails. Mine aren't so, unfortunately. :(
Nice tips - i totally agree with the last one. I have very brittle nails and generally have noticed that when i have nail paint on they are much sturdier!
