Life With & Without Face Powders ~ A Guide

How I Fell In Love With Powder:
I had this flatmate/friend in college. She had a dusky skin tone, and her skin was flawless! Smooth and spotless, albeit major dark circles around her eyes. She loved taking care of her skin. Even before brushing her teeth in the morning, she would make a paste of besan (gramflour) and grounded nuts to wash & exfoliate her face with. I'd never have the energy for such things that early. Her mom would send her these containers of powdered nuts mixed with other powdered stuff specially made for her skin. Read between the lines here. So this girl used to put on a Lakmé Compact Powder when she went out - the puraana (old) one that came in a green packaging - and her skin would look even more flawless! I could stare at her skin for hours. I was a simple eyeliner & lipstick gal then, and that's when I decided to try out powders.
And.... a perpetual habit was born.
I've never talked about powders before, so I thought I'd do it today. Below are some of the powders I have with me right now, and I'll just talk through them and let you know my favorite and the not-so-favorite kinds, for your reference:
Loose Powders:
  • Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Powder ~ If you feel this powder, you'll fall in love instantly. It will haunt you, until you go back to the store to buy it. That's what happened to me in Kuala Lumpur. It makes skin feel like silk. It's white because it's meant to suit all skin tones. The reason why I don't use it much is because if you use too much, it'll definitely show patches of white, especially in photos. Let's not forget it's rumored to have caused a lot of makeup mishaps for many celebs
  • NARS Loose Powder in Beach ~ It's a nice setting powder, but I wouldn't buy it again.
  • The Body Shop Loose Face Powder in 01 ~ This is my 2nd container, so you can imagine how much I like it. I always seem to go back to it.
  • I couldn't find my Maybelline Dream Matte Powder (pics here), which is a pretty good handbag compact
  • Also, MAC Blot Powder (pics here), which I'd somewhat forgotten I have until now, this moment! =\

Compact Powders:
  • Rimmel Stay Matte Powder in Sandstorm 004 ~ It's a nice inexpensive drugstore compact, but it's not as silky as I'd like it to be.

  • MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural in Light Medium ~ I like this one when I'm not wearing foundation, and I want a little bit of coverage.

  • Lakmé Perfect Radiance Intense Whitening Compact in Ivory Fair 01 ~ This is too yellow for my skin tone. It's also heavier than most of the compacts I've used. I was quite disappointed with it.

  • Majolica Majorca Pressed Pore Powder ~ This was from a Limited Edition collection. It's my current handbag compact powder. Just a translucent compact powder. More pics and swatch here

Compact 'Vs' Loose Powders ~ I personally prefer Loose Powders, because they feel lighter and look more natural over foundation. I only use compacts for touch-ups, when I'm out.

THE BEST Loose Powder I've Ever Used: Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder. It costs around Rs.2600, and I get why it's won most beauty awards. It contains the finest French cashmere talc, hence very smooth and lightweight. A mini version came with the Undercover Pot that I have, and I've already used up the powder before the duo concealers. It's been on my wishlist for years.

Best Way To Apply Face Powders: I prefer using a fluffy powder brush when using both loose & compact powders, because I only want a thin veil to set my foundation. When I use a powder puff, I dust off excess with a brush- preferably a soft synthetic one, like the Too Faced Powder Pouf Brush.

Picking Powder Shades: My skin has a golden undertone, so I like using powders with some yellow in them, and I avoid pinkish-looking ones. I usually go for 'Translucent' (transparent) or natural beige shades. If you have a neutral skin tone, pick beige shades. You could always mix 2 powders, if you can't find the right match. Kryolan makes a yellow loose powder that suits most skin tones, and can be mixed with beige & tan powders.

Life Without Powders: One weekend at the in-laws, I noticed that I didn't pack my The Body Shop Loose Powder + I'd also switched handbags and left my makeup pouch where my compact was at home. I felt a very withdrawal symptom kind of feeling. Clean & Clear Oil Blotting Sheets to the rescue, thankfully.

If you don't want to wear foundation, but want your skin to look radiant and fresh, try powders and see the difference!

Hope you found this post helpful. Would love to know which powders you love.

Tony Moly Cat Chu Wink Lipstick Pink Wink ~ Lipstick In A Cat!

There are many superstitions surrounding black cats. The most common one I grew up with was: It's bad luck when a black cat crosses your path, so you have to spit 3 times before you keep walking, otherwise something bad will happen.
I know, very stupid. But when you're a kid, and you see grown-ups spit, you spit! (Remember Joey and that actor in that World War I movie in Friends?)
Nowadays, I do see black cats crossing my path quite often. Do I spit 3 times? Of course not! I stopped believing in superstitions that require me to do unladylike things like that in public, and potentially mess up the lipstick I'm wearing.
That's why I had no qualms about bringing a certain black cat onto my vanity......
Tony Moly Cat Chu Wink Lipstick ~ There are about 7 shades available, and I picked 02 Pink Wink, a coral pink shade. It's all about the cat, so I won't pretend I got it for the quality of lipstick, but I have to say it's pretty good. The formula is lightweight, sheer, balmy/moisturizing & easily wearable. It has a faint floral scent that doesn't really transfer to the the lips.

Happy Colorful Lipstick Haul ~ YSL, Bourjois, Revlon

I wanted to end this week with a happy colorful blog post! These are some lippies that I hauled today and one of them some other day. I went to the market with only the YSL lipstick in mind, but I saw the Bourjois Shine Edition Lipsticks, which I'd been after for quite some time. Look! The colorful packaging is so cute! I had to get one of each color, but I didn't see the green/mint one.
  • YSL Rouge Volupte Shine Pink In Paris #13 ~ I didn't like the original Rouge Volupte Lipstick because they were too creamy for my taste, but I adore the packaging. That's why I was happy to see a new sheerer formula. Pink In Paris!
  • Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter Juicy Papaya ~ One of the new shades introduced. Juicy Papaya is peachier than Tutti Frutti, which is more orange.
  • Revlon Super Lustrous Pink In The Afternoon ~  It was on sale at Superdrug.
  • Bourjois Shine Edition 22 Famous Fuchsia ~ Pastel yellow packaging! ♥
  • Bourjois Shine Edition 20 1,2,3 Soleil ~ Quirky name, gonna google what it means! Un, Dos, Tres Soleil!
  • Bourjois Shine Edition 24 Rose xoxo ~ Cute name! xoxo.

Will post swatches of everything in the coming week(s)

Have a happy colorful weekend! =)

[Sorry, this haul made me so enthu.]

Fifty Shades Of Grey Inspired Look & Smoky Grey Eye Makeup Tutorial

"Romantic, liberating and totally addictive, this is a novel that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever." ~ Fifty Shades Of Grey by E L James.
I've had this post in my head for over a year. I had almost everything, except the most important thing- the Grey Tie. It had to be very similar to the one on the book cover. In New Delhi, I went to all the shops that sell men's formal wear - Lifestyle, Shopper's Stop, Van Heusen, Arrow, etc. It became an obsession. I kept saying to the man that I wanted to buy it for him, but really it's for me ;p
Then we moved to Newcastle. I looked for one there too. I read that grey ties had become a trend in UK after the book, and I wondered if they just meant London. I was so confident I'd find it quickly there that I bought a grey eyeshadow & a grey nail polish. But no luck.
Then about 6 months later, when I'd almost given up, in a shop in Dubai {Koton}, I found something close (or it found me!) By close, I mean something textured, not with stripes or plain.
When I created this look, it's not the female protagonist, Anastasia Steele, who inspired me, it's her complicated & highly controlling lover with very dark secrets ~ Christian Grey.
Here's the step-by-step tutorial on how I did the eyes:
1. Take matte black eyeshadow on a pointy pencil brush, tap or blow the brush so there's minimal fallout, apply it on the outer corner & inner corner. Do it like you're drawing a C. Curve the black e/s all the way to the hollow of your crease. I used Sleek Makeup Noir from Oh So Special Palette with Sigma E40 brush.
2. With a clean blending brush, join the two C's at the crease by running the brush back & forth in a windshield wiper motion. I used Sigma E25 brush.
3. It should look like that. You could add more black if you prefer it darker.
4. Wet a flat shader brush and wipe/squeeze off excess water before using it to apply the grey eyeshadow on the center of lid, not touching the edges of the black e/s. Applying eyeshadows with a damp brush make them look more vibrant, and it gives shimmery eyeshadows that foiled effect + they stick to skin better. I used 2 grey eyeshadows- Rimmel Glam Eyes Mono Eye Shadow Night Jewel & Sleek Makeup Glitz from Oh So Special Palette with Sigma E60 brush
5. Apply the same grey eyeshadow on the center of your lower lash line.
6. With the pencil brush & matte black eyeshadow you used before, apply on the outer 1/4th of lower lash line. Join it with the black e/s on upper outer corner.
7.  Do the same on inner 1/4th near the tear duct.
8. It should look like that.
9.  Apply black kohl on the upper waterline & lower waterline, but only on either side leaving the grey area in the center. I used Lakmé  Kohl Ultimate. *This method does not suit my eyes, and makes me look drunk (hehe!), mainly because I have hooded lids. I should have lined and smudged the black all the way.
10. Apply black liquid or gel liner close to your lash line. Line straight out till it touches the edge of the black eyeshadow at the outer corner. I used L'Oreal Super Liner Instant Impact Felt Liner.
11. Touch up the black eyeshadow if needed. Here, I applied a little bit more and repeated step 2.
12. I put on false lashes, and applied black mascara on top & bottom lashes. I used Eylure 101 lashes & Max Factor 2000 Calorie Curved Brush Mascara.
DONE!
I hope you'll try it. You could always replace the grey with other colors, any color you want- gold, bronze, peach, green, blue, beige/taupe, etc.
Products I Used:
Face: MAC Prep+Prime Line Filler, Bourjois 123 Perfect Foundtion #54 Beige, Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer Medium, Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Concealer, NARS Loose Powder Beach.
Blush: Sleek Blush Dolly Mix from Blush By 3 Sweet Cheeks. Swatched here
Bronzer: Benefit Hoola. Swatched here
Lips: Bourjois Levres Contour Lip liner #12 Facetieuse, Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense Lipstick #32. Blotted those, then I applied Bourjois Levres Contour Lip Liner #11 Enjoleuse. Yes, I was confused what to wear, and should have applied only the last one! =D
Grey Nail Polish: Miss Sporty Lasting Colour in New Black
Shirt with bubble sleeves: Mango Suit.
Grey Dress: Guess
Grey Tie: Koton
Silver Earrings: Forever 21
***[This is for readers under 18 years of age: I don't want to sound like a parent, but I would advise you not to read this book until you're over 18. Better yet, wait till you're 25.]

Quick Tip For Long & Strong Nails

I was just going to Instagram this, but I thought why not share it with everyone! Lately, my nails are growing unnaturally fast and are noticeably thick & strong. For months they've been breaking & peeling easily, that's why I noticed it more. Before I clip & file them to a comfortable length, I wanted to show you.
I think it's the Aloe Vera products I'm using:
  • Carex Aloe Vera Hand Wash ~ I just love how this smells!
  • Vaseline Aloe Fresh Body Gel
*But I use the hand wash more on my hands.
I did some googling, and found out Aloe Vera has nail strengthening properties. I never knew that!
Ladies in India, try with Brihan's Aloe Vera Gel. It's my holy grail product that I keep in the fridge all the time.

Have any of you experienced this?

LOTD ~ Blue Eyes & Boats

This was the makeup I had on yesterday. I rarely wear bright colored eyeshadows on regular days. But right now I'm loving this turquoise blue eyeshadow and have been wearing it like a liner. Now that's one way to wear bright eyeshadows, ladies. Just apply with a wet flat or angled liner brush for a little bit of intensity. If you're a scaredy cat, try only on your bottom lash line.
Face ~ Bourjois 123 Perfect Foundation Beige 54 (shown here), Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer, The Body Shop Loose Powder.
Cheeks ~ MAC The Perfect Cheek Blush
Lips ~ MAC Pink Pigeon Lipstick. Photos here
Eyes ~ Inglot Eyeshadow 504 DS (shown here) applied with a wet Colorbar Fabulips Lip Brush , Lakmé Kohl Ultimate & Urban Decay Blackout (matte black) to tightline and line very close to upper lash line and on waterline. Since I have hooded lids, I had to contour my crease, especially with a heavy lower lash line.  I blended Urban Decay Buck, Naked & Blackout (all from Naked Palettes), Maybelline The Falsies Black Drama Mascara.
I'm surrounded by boats & ships here in Dundee. I imagine seeing Jack Sparrow in one of them someday - he waves at me, I wave back & invite him over, he comes and braids my hair, and we drink tea together. I thought I'd share some pics.....
Frigate UnicornScotland’s only preserved warship, and one of the six oldest ships in the world. I pass it all the time.

I walk on that bridge whenever I go to the city center

A gift when we moved in ~ "We hope you enjoy your new home for the next few months."

Weekend Snacks

Regards from Mr.CZ =)

Happy Weekend Everyone....See you again next week!

INGLOT 10 Square Eyeshadow Palette ~ 10 Things I Love About You

10 Things I Love About You:
I have found them,
I could write them,
I would shout them,
But......

So I finally took pictures & used this INGLOT 10 Square Eyeshadow Palette that I got in April (April!) I'd over-swatched & obsessed over all the colors at the store, so I already knew I'd have no complaints about the quality of any of them. They're all amazing!
Hope you like it...and it's name! =)
Price:
  • Eyeshadow Refills ~ Rs.350 x 10 = Rs.3500
  • 10 Square Freedom Palette ~ Rs.1400
  •  Total: Rs.4900.
463 DS ~  Ivory with sparkly gold shimmer. Perfect for the inner corners.
341 Matte ~ A pale peachy pink. It'll be used for blending, but it can be used as a subtle blush too!
37 Shine ~ Metallic Bronze. Always wearable.
460 DS ~ Taupe with gold & silver shimmer. This was love at first sight.
326 Matte ~ This is so far my favorite deep cool brown eyeshadow. It's so silky!
464 DS ~  Terracotta with gold shimmer. I would wear this with 504.
477 DS ~ Lime green with golden shimmer. This is the one I bought twice, btw (post here)
71 AMC ~ Purple with silver shimmer. It's hard to find purple eyeshadows that are pigmented, but this is pretty good.
504 DS ~ Turquoise blue with silver shimmer. I'm loving this on my eyes these days. I wore it only on my lower lash line the other day, and applied it with a wet brush.
482 DS ~ Prussian blue with silver shimmer. It's absolutely gorg! It pops when worn over a cream e/s, like Maybelline Color Tattoo.

*DS means Double Sparkle
 463, 341, 37, 460, 326

464, 477, 71, 504, 482
